Carolina Shores Quilters Guild support of children staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham

Ronald McDonald House of Durham

One of the projects in which the Quilters Guild is involved is making quilts for children staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham while undergoing treatment at Duke University Medical Center. Some of the quilts are given to children undergoing long-term treatment on the pediatrics floor.

Photos taken during a visit by Carolina Shores Quilt Guild members on May 5, 2010. The little girl is being held by a volunteer and her mother is in the blue jacket. She chose a pink quilt with paperdolls on it that happened to be made by Lucy, on the far right. The quilt in the forground was made by Rose O'Donnell. The quilters from L to R are Kathy Welker, Halla Cramer, Kathleen Ball and Lucy Timmerman.

A picture is worth a thousand words!

The children are proud to display the handcrafted quilts donated to the Ronald McDonald House each year.

"I want to share some pictures of the wonderful quilts made for the children at the Ronald McDonald House. They were very excited to pick out their own special blankets. Mabel, the young lady sitting to the left with the ladybug quilt, received a double lung transplant in March. Mabel and her mother go to the Center of Living every day for Mabel’s rehabilitation. Dana, the young lady sitting to the right in pink, is waiting for a lung transplant. Mabel and Dana became great friends while staying at the House and found many hours of warm comfort with their quilts. Thank you to our wonderful quilters for the Hope that your beautiful creations bring to our children.” Scharman Koniezcka, Annual Fund Director

The mother of this 14-year-old boy from the Chicago area chose this quilt for him. They have been coming to Duke and the Ronald McDonald House for many years. He has severe congenital vision problems including glaucoma and cataracts and has had multiple surgeries. His mother told me that unfortunately someone must die before he can have what he now needs -- a cornea transplant. He talked excitedly about the two American Idol finalists. I left wondering what it was like to only hear American Idol. Since he received the quilt in May 2008, Kyle and his family have moved to the Durham area to be near Duke University Medical Center. With his new corneal transplants he now can see his quilt -- and American Idol contestants.
